Roxbury enjoyed a high school baseball season to remember in 2014. But the Gaels' ultimate dream was derailed by a pitcher who experienced a day he'll never forget. Brandon Janofsky fired a one-hitter for Jackson Memorial to lead the Jaguars to a 2-0 victory over Roxbury in the Group IV state final. Janofsky had a no-hitter going until a single with one out in the seventh inning ended his bid.
Roxbury starter Nick Busby started out strong as well, retiring the first 10 batters to face him. But Jackson put together three hits in the top of the fourth to plate the only runs of the game. Mike Petrizzo had an RBI double and Joe DeMaio followed with a run-scoring triple. Timmy Pilrun pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Gaels. Craig Roumes broke up the no-hitter with his single in the last inning, but Janofsky retired the next two batters to close out the game. The junior righty ended up with seven strikeouts, three walks and a hit batsman. After feeling off-balance from the wind-up in the early innings, Janofsky switched to pitching out of the stretch exclusively for the rest of the game, played at Toms River North High School. It's the first state title since 1972 for Jackson, which finishes the season 20-7-1. Roxbury won the Morris County title and its first sectional crown in 13 years, but came up short of claiming the first state title in program history. The Gaels finish 25-7-1.
