Morristown-Beard barely escaped an upset bid by Montclair Kimberley in the quarterfinals of the Prep B boys' soccer state tournament. The Crimson scored a late goal to tie the game, then advanced by winning a penalty-kick shootout. The game ended in a 1-1 draw after second-seeded Morristown-Beard scored with under seven minutes to play in regulation to knot the score. Following two scoreless overtimes, the Crimson edged MKA 4-3 in the shootout.
Cougars goalie John Baney very nearly stole the game for his team, the seventh seed. Baney made numerous excellent saves in the second half and in overtime. MKA took the 1-0 lead on Alex Cappitelli's first-half goal, coming on a header off a free kick by Ross Musicant. Morristown-Beard took control of the contest in the second half, but could not get anything past Baney until Mason Toye set up Max Borchert right in front of the net for the tying goal. The game result is officially a tie, bringing Morristown-Beard's record to 10-3-1. The Crimson host Princeton Day School in the Prep B semifinals next week.
