On a busy night at Union High School, 56 wrestlers continued their dream of reaching Atlantic City while another 56 saw their seasons come to an end. Wrestlers contested the pre-quarterfinal round of the Region 4 tournament in a do-or-die scenario.

Winners of the matches on Wednesday night move on to Friday's quarterfinals, at the same site. They join the champions from last weekend's district tournaments bidding for one of the three state qualifying spots available at each weight class.

Nutley, rated the top team in Essex County this winter, had nine wrestlers competing in the pre-quarterfinal round. However, only three of those Raiders advanced with victories.

Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge and Queen of Peace enjoyed better evenings. Both Bergen County schools had six wrestlers competing; all six Queen of Peace athletes advanced along with five wrestlers from Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge.

Both West Essex and Passaic Valley advanced four of six wrestlers.
