Down six goals just before halftime, the Pope John boys' lacrosse team refused to give up. Neither did the Lions concede when they fell behind by a pair of goals with two minutes left in regulation. The result was a remarkable 13-12 overtime triumph over Wayne Valley for Pope John. Billy Van Dyke scored the game-winner two minutes into sudden death off a pass from Davis Stoner.
Wayne Valley dominated the first half and built a 10-4 lead just before the break. But the Lions scored once in the final minute of the second quarter, then controlled the entire third quarter, scoring five times to tie the game at 10-10. Robert Papa scored twice for the Indians in the final quarter to establish a two-goal lead, but Pope John answered back before the end of regulation to force the extra session. Sean Ferguson led the Lions with five goals, while Stoner had four to go along with his overtime assist. Van Dyke scored twice for Pope John. Wayne Valley got four goals and two assists from Papa. James Clarke tallied three goals, while Austin Shelly and Billy Crank added a pair each. Pope John improves to 5-6 with the win while Wayne Valley falls to 6-5.
