DePaul scored off a corner kick with just seconds left in regulation to force overtime, then won it on another corner kick in the second extra session to pull out a 3-2 boys' soccer win over upset-minded Wayne Valley. The Indians haven't had much to cheer about this season, but came close to a huge victory over their cross-town rival. Two goals by Ardit Ala in the second half erased a one-goal deficit and poised Wayne Valley on the brink of a big upset.
But on probably DePaul's last chance of the game, Matthew Gottrell headed in a rebound of a Nick DiBiase shot that hit the post. And with less than three minutes left in the second OT, Nicolas DelRio scored to give DePaul the win. Luis Mendoza had the other DePaul goal on a first-half penalty kick. Wayne Valley goalkeeper Ben French helped give his team a chance in this contest with 11 saves, including several excellent stops. The Indians fall to 3-10 despite the tremendous effort. DePaul keeper Troy Teresak had three saves. The Spartans are now 9-2-1. For sports video highlights of this Big North Conference boys' soccer game, click play in the box at left. |
