A key run to end the first half and open the second proved decisive as Wayne Valley moved on to the semifinals of the Passaic County boys' basketball tournament. The Indians defeated Passaic Tech 64-51 on their home floor. Down by four points, Wayne Valley closed the second quarter on a 12-0 run. The Indians then opened the third quarter on a 9-3 burst to take a 14-point lead. Passaic Tech never got any closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Nick Goodwin paced Wayne Valley with 22 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Nick Giuliano had 15 points, four steals and three assists for the Indians. Alex Kokos added 14 points and four assists for Wayne Valley, the fourth seed in the PCT. Eric Johnson-Alford sat out the first half for disciplinary reasons, but made a major impact after halftime for Passaic Tech. Johnson-Alford had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Derrick Cuavers scored 13 points and Yohanly Ortiz added 11 for the fifth-seeded Bulldogs. Passaic Tech is now 10-10. Wayne Valley, at 17-2, is an extremely strong #4 seed. The Indians will meet Wayne Hills in next weekend's semifinals. First, though, the two crosstown rivals have a regular-season date on Tuesday with a league title on the line.
