With Emily Holden firing a three-hit shutout, Nutley upset the top-ranked softball team in the state of New Jersey. The Raiders pushed across a run in the fifth inning to pull out the 1-0 win over Mount St. Dominic. Holden struck out 10 batters and walked none in her gem. She also had the only hit of the game for Nutley.
The run came without benefit of a base hit. Danielle Pomponio drew a leadoff walk and moved up to second base on a bunt. With two outs, Sydney Kunz hit a hard grounder to the right side that could not be handled. Running all the way, Pomponio raced in to score. Pomponio also threw out two baserunners trying to steal. Mount St. Dominic pitcher Kelsey Oh allowed just one hit. She struck out 12 and walked two as the hard-luck loser. The Lady Lions, who were ranked nationally as well as #1 in the Garden State, fall to 4-1. Nutley improves to 5-1.
