In its 35-game football winning streak, Mountain Lakes never found itself in such a predicament. After a poor first half, the Herd trailed Wallington 20-0 in the North 1, Group I sectional final at the New Meadowlands Stadium. But as they have all year, the Herd showed heart and rallied to make it a game. Mountain Lakes had a chance to pull out the win but the Panthers held on to win 23-21 and end the Herd's reign as section champs.
Charlie Vellis threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers. Running back Criss Sullivan had more than 200 all-purpose yards and scored twice. Marcin Koc had a touchdown reception and a key field goal. Greg Cuccinello threw a pair of touchdown passes in the Lakers' second-half comeback try. It's Wallington's first sectional title since 1990. Mountain Lakes' streak had been tops among New Jersey football teams and 8th-longest in the nation before the loss.
