Paramus Catholic recorded dramatic victories over Don Bosco Prep in each of the last two state playoffs. But the Paladins' latest win against the Ironmen had the wildest script of all. Donald Stewart leapt high to haul in a Hail Mary pass from Allan Walters on the final play of the game to give Paramus Catholic a thrilling and unlikely 19-16 triumph. The Paladins drove downfield for the winning score in less than two minutes without any timeouts.
Stewart had 151 receiving yards on the night and scored a pair of touchdowns. Ahmad Thomas also ran for a score for the Paladins. Malik Bakker had a huge rushing game for Don Bosco, piling up more than 230 yards on the ground. Quarterback Tommy DeVito threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Ironmen, but was injured on the second TD and had to sit out the rest of the game. With backup Mark McGuire under center, Don Bosco drove in the fourth quarter to set up Ethan Cordaro's tiebreaking 22-yard field goal with 1:42 to play. But the Ironmen left just enough time for Paramus Catholic. The winning play came after a defensive holding call on a fourth down had extended the Paramus Catholic drive. With five seconds left and the Paladins at the 35-yard line, Walters launched the ball high in the air and Stewart outjumped his defender in the end zone. It's the fourth straight win for the Paladins against Don Bosco. Paramus Catholic is now 2-3 while the Ironmen fall to 3-2.
