Four days after a shocking loss in its county final, the Summit boys' lacrosse team nearly relived the nightmare in a match-up with Ridgewood. But this time a last-second shot skimmed off the post, allowing the Hilltoppers to escape with a 7-6 win. Andrew Chase scored four consecutive goals in the third quarter as Summit erased a 4-1 halftime deficit. Jack Johnson scored twice and Evan Kulpan also had a goal. Chris Fowler notched a pair of assists.
Summit led 7-5 with just over a minute to play when the Hilltoppers turned the ball over, leading to a Cooper Telesco goal. Then, in the final seconds, Ridgewood nearly completed a Hail Mary type of play, but the shot by Jack Barclay just barely missed as time expired. The finish was reminiscent of last weekend's Union County final, when Westfield scored twice in the final seconds to force overtime and eventually stunned the Hilltoppers. The tying goal in that game came on a length-of-the-field shot by the Westfield goalie. Kevin Mollihan led Ridgewood with three goals. Wylie Sherman and Dylan Peabody also scored. Teddy Murphy allowed just one goal in the first half while saving four shots. This is the first loss of the season for Ridgewood, which falls to 14-1. Summit goalie Ted Cranley had four saves. The Hilltoppers are now 15-1. For sports video highlights of this New Jersey high school boys' lacrosse game, click play in the box at left. |
